Della Ruiz ·

Neutering a dog costs $65 to $340 at nonprofit and municipal clinics depending on weight, $229 to $399 at a full-service private clinic, and $487 on average nationally per a 2025 industry study. These figures come from four published clinic price lists in Texas, Colorado, and Virginia, plus a secondary source for the national average. Weight bands vary by clinic, so each row below keeps the source’s own published range rather than forcing it into a bucket it wasn’t priced for.

Dashes mark rows the source didn't price — full-service and low-cost/nonprofit figures almost never come from the same clinic for the same row. The last two rows are a national average from a secondary industry study, not a specific clinic.

Reports and Statistics

Method
Figures came from direct fetches of each clinic or organization's own price page. WebSearch's session budget was exhausted before any query returned, so search ran through the DuckDuckGo HTML endpoint via WebFetch instead (11 queries, ~14 page verifications). The Second Chances Vet Care price sheet is a PDF that WebFetch could not extract directly; it was downloaded with curl and parsed locally with Python's pypdf.
Gaps
We could not find a published fee schedule from any university veterinary TEACHING hospital itself (Cornell, UC Davis, Colorado State's own hospital, Purdue, Auburn, Texas A&M, Kansas State, Ohio State, Mississippi State all checked directly) — general/companion-animal pricing at these institutions is phone-quote only. The Humane Colorado clinic (CSU Spur) is the closest university-adjacent price list found. We could not access the original 2025 Synchrony/CareCredit Average Procedural Cost Study directly — its figures are sourced secondhand through a veterinary blog citing 'via Spot Pet Insurance.' We could not find an AVMA report with a free, specific spay/neuter dollar figure (their economic reports are sold as paid products). We could not find one source giving cost by state or metro in a systematic comparison table; aggregator sites (CostWhale, TheHowMuch) claim state-level averages but were excluded per instructions since they are unsourced aggregator guesses, not a primary table. We could not find any source that itemizes microchipping into a base spay/neuter price.
When to call a vet
Three steps, in order. If a sign appears in more than one step, treat it as the higher one.
- One vomit or loose stool, then normal energy, appetite and drinking.
- A single skipped meal in an otherwise bright, playful animal.
- Mild itching with no broken skin, no smell and no hair loss.
- A sneeze or two with clear eyes and a normal appetite.
- Signs that persist or return rather than settling.
- Off food, or noticeably thirstier than usual.
- Limping, an eye held shut, a new lump, or an ear that smells or is shaken constantly.
- Weight you can feel coming off through the ribs and spine.
- Any change at all in a very young, very old, pregnant or already-unwell animal.
- Difficulty breathing, choking, or gums that look pale, blue or grey.
- Collapse, a seizure, or an animal you cannot rouse.
- Cat A male cat straining in the litter tray without producing urine.
- Dog A swollen, tight belly with restlessness and retching that brings nothing up.
- Known or suspected poisoning — chocolate, grapes and raisins, xylitol, antifreeze, human medication, or lilies for cats.
- Dog Heatstroke: collapse, confusion, or heavy panting that does not settle as the dog cools.
- Heavy bleeding, a road accident, or a fall from height.
